From Opinions to Facts
My journey to building this app wasn't a straight line. It happened in three stages:
Phase 1: The Fan
Initially, I was watching and giving verbal feedback. But telling a teenager "you need to fight harder" usually comes across as criticism, not advice. It led to defensiveness, not improvement.
Phase 2: The Cameraman
I tried filming games to catch the "best moments." It is great to have those moments on video. I was trying to motivate by showing what was going right. But I was missing the experience of watching the game live.
Phase 3: The Scout
I started studying professional scouting. I took a pen and notebook to the sideline and counted: Passes completed. Duels won. The dynamic changed immediately. When I showed my son the paper, he didn't argue. You can't argue with a tally mark.
Why the App?
I built fballyt for convenience. Pen-and-paper work, but it's slow and hard to aggregate over a season. The app takes that proven "scouting method" and makes it fast enough to use from the sideline without missing the match.
